25-08-2010 Limbu's widow seeking judicial review of the inquest hearing

The legal battle regarding the inquest hearing of Mr. Limbu, the Nepalese street sleeper shot dead by a police constable, has entered a new stage. His widow, Sony Rai, obtained legal aid enabling her to seek a judicial review for the hearing process. The review hearing will be held on January next year.

After 76 days of hearing, the Jury of the Court returned a verdict of lawful killing on 25 May, 2010. Neither Sony, nor the Nepalese community was convinced by the decision and insisted there could hardly be a fair trial. In fact, we found the whole process, including the investigation by the Police and the inquest hearing as biased and justice could hardly seems to be done.

Hong Kong Unison has offered support to Sony and her 6-year-old daughter since their arrival in Hong Kong . The latter now study primary one in a private school and are able to speak simple Cantonese. We will continue monitoring the situation and offer help to the family if necessary.

04-08-2010 Unison offered support to EM HKCEE candidates

On 4 August, our social workers, Milk Tsang and Alan Din , had stationed in Islamic Kasim Tuet Memorial College and Pak Kau College , providing advice and assistance to ethnic minority students in the HKCEE Results Announcement Day. We had invited their senior brothers, who are now having post secondary education to share their experiences. The purpose was to encourage students to continue their studies even they did not obtain satisfactory results in the public exam.

Currently, EM students who could not be promoted to Form Six are usually admitted to the foundation diplomas (FDs) provided by IVE. Yet as most of the FD courses are conducted in Chinese, they have to confine their choices to three subjects, i.e., business, hospitality and information technology. Nevertheless, they could still choose other subjects after finishing the FDs. Most importantly, it is an alternative route for them to complete university study and obtain a bachelor degree.

We are ready to provide advice and support to EM youth who want to continue their studies. For enquires, please feel free to call our staff at 2789 3246.
