Joint application for police post
Hong Kong Unison is planning to launch a collective application by ethnic minority youth for the post of police constable. We will provide advice and assistance to the applicants. For instance, we might invite those who is currently working in the Police Force to share their lives as policemen, and to provide tips on how to go through the application process.
The Police Force rarely recruited ethnic minority people since the handover in 1997. Part of the reason is the imposition of Chinese language requirement, i.e., a pass in the Chinese language subject of HKCEE, for its job applicants. In 2007, the Government has relaxed the requirement, and accepted a grade D in GCSE Examination as an alternative Chinese language requirement.
Hong Kong Unison considers the present recruitment policy, specifically the imposition of written Chinese proficiency to ethnic minority job applicants as “indirect discrimination” under the Race Discrimination Ordinance. We believe the command of Cantonese is enough for ethnic minority people to join the Police Force. Therefore, even you do not read or write Chinese, you are still encouraged to apply for the police post. Through collective application, we sincerely hope the Police would take it more seriously to the applications from ethnic minority communities and to ensure they have equal opportunities.
