─2017 Public education campaign

To commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination proclaimed by the UN, which is observed annually on 21 March; Hong Kong Unison has been running our large scale public education campaign in March since 2001.

This year on 5 March (Sun), Hong Kong Unison is organizing a day of exciting events to promote understanding of ethnic minority issues in Hong Kong.

Life.Minority and She Says Photo Exhibitions capture the life and stories of ethnic minority men and women resisting stereotypes, and, like many Hongkongers, working hard for a better future.

On the same day, we will host the Society Game, an immersive experience to simulate the experience of local ethnic minorities. Later in the afternoon, an interactive workshop “Equal Rights Advocates” will look into whether ethnic minorities are equally protected under Hong Kong laws and why tackling ethnic minority issues matters to every democratic-minded person.

All activities are free of charge and open to the public. RSVP are required for participating in the Society Game and Workshop.

Please stay tune and stay update with us through our news feed and Facebook page!

Photographing Ethnic Minorities of Hong Kong Photo Exhibition

Hong Kong, branded as “Asia’s World City,” where eastern and western festivals are celebrated, and cuisines from around the world can be found, is a multi-ethnic society. Yet for many people in this Chinese-majority city, the diverse faces and stories of ethnic minorities either seem inherently foreign or they blur into a homogenous impression.

Life.Minority shows the stories of Hongkongers with varying skin colors, breathing the same air and contributing to Hong Kong as the rest of the city.

In She Says, ethnic minority women share life stories countering popular depiction of them as “submissive, confined to the home, and subordinate to male dominance.” What we see are picture upon picture of courage, compassion, strength and grace.

Time: 10:30am-6:30pm
Venue: L205 Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre

Unison will also be conducting school tours and workshops to promoting and raising the awareness of racial equality and elimination of racial discrimination in Hong Kong.

3.21 Background

The “International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination” was proclaimed by the United Nations in 1966 due to a tragedy happened on March 21, 1960, in Sharpeville, South Africa Police opened fire on hundreds of peaceful demonstrators against the apartheid “Pass Laws” and killed 69 of them. In 1966, the United Nations declared March 21 as the Day in memory of this tragedy. In 1989, Canada became the 1st country to promote March 21 Campaign. March 21, therefore, has become a national focal point for raising awareness and involving publics in the movement.

Definition of “Racial Discrimination”

Racial discrimination means any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, color, descent, or national or ethnic origin, which has the purpose or effect of impairing human rights and fundamental freedoms in any field of public life. However, it does not refer to any measures taken in the spirit of promoting equal opportunities helping people of different races to overcome their disadvantages.
